Sleeper Story! Los Angeles Times Goofs on Bill O'Reilly

Times admits it broke a promise and called Bill O'Reilly "ultraconservative."

- July 2005 -

In a Sunday, July 10, 2005, Los Angeles Times piece on the Live 8 concert and the activism of U2's Bono, written by pop music critic Robert Hilburn, the label "ultraconservative" was placed in front of the name of Fox News host/commentator Bill O'Reilly. Said the Times,

"Bono has been so persuasive in his advocacy of debt relief for Africa that he has won the respect even of controversial, ultraconservative Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly." (emphasis added)

Well, today (Tue. July 12, 2005), the Times, in its "For the Record" space on page A2, had a little thing to say about that "ultraconservative" label they had tagged.

What's going on at the Times?! "Copy Editors Out of Control"?! This goof by the Times is reminiscent of a TheMediaReport.com 'Hall of Fame' item about a Times copy editor who deleted the word "pro-life" from an opera review (!) and replaced it with the word "antiabortion," although the opera had nothing to due with abortion.

TheMediaReport.com sayss ... There's hardly a day without laughs reading the Los Angeles Times!
