The Drudge
Report has linked to a Reuters article,
"Canada's group sex club patrons swinging free." A recent court
ruling has made swingers' clubs legal in Canada. However, buried in the
article is the following (emphasis mine):
"In the mainly French-speaking and predominantly Catholic
province of Quebec, however, the decision caused barely a ripple of
adverse reaction."
A couple issues, if I may ...
First, although a majority in Quebec may be nominally
Catholic, a 2000 poll revealed that only
20 percent of Catholics in Quebec attend church on a weekly basis.
(It was 88 percent in the 1950's. And since the poll is five
years old, one cannot help but think that the number may now be lower
than 20 percent.) Also, several Catholic churches have closed their
doors and have been sold in recent years.
Second, one can't help but wonder if the writer, Robert Melnbardis,
would have tagged the article with a "predominantly Muslim,"
"predominantly Hindu," or "predominantly Jewish" label, if that had been
the case.
Why did Melnbardis feel the need to say the province was
"predominantly Catholic" when Catholicism no longer appears to have a
significant impact there?
Hmmm.
